Carapac has developed a sustainable, durable and compostable plastic alternative material made from crustacean shell waste. We have also developed a world-first sustainable and zero waste process to convert this shell waste into a range of films that can be used as a “shrimple-swap” packaging solution.
These films include semi-rigid, flexible, cling and adhesive forms that can form bags, boxes, punnet sleeves and wraps. The film and packaging can be tailored to the specific product requirements and the customer’s specification or design.
Carapac's packaging is designed to last years in stable conditions, but when it is exposed to soil conditions it breaks down in 3–6 weeks into a fertiliser. The material has been designed to be water-resistant, yet ocean-dissolvable.
Carapac's first products are fresh food packaging including salad bags and strawberry punnets, as the material is naturally antimicrobial and will extend the shelf life of these products by 2 weeks.
