  • Description of the activity / Ecodesign, new materials and manufacturing

Atacama, an MIT spinout, develops sustainable polymers from diverse, local raw materials, aiming to replace single-use plastic packaging with lower costs and zero CO2 emissions.

Our flagship product, Woodpack (WPk), is a recycled paper-based flexible film with validated market applications. WPk's innovation is driven by our AI system, which refines formulations in real-time to ensure consistent quality, lower costs, and a minimal carbon footprint—using just 11% of the energy required by traditional plastics.

By overcoming bio-based feedstock variability, WPk achieves 100% bio-based status with a low-temperature polymerization process, making it cost-competitive. WPk is home-compostable, paper-recyclable, can be aluminum-coated plastic-free, and is compatible with standard packaging lines.

Atacama plans to use its AI-robotics platform to commercialize more sustainable materials globally.
