Bioplastics4health SL (B4H) aims to industrially produce films and other packaging for the food industry using a biopolymer called PHBV, which is 100% compostable. To this end, PHBV synthesis will initially be carried out using commercial starch extracted from potato starch, through a sustainable and scalable technology developed by Tecnalia. Industrial production of PHBV will take place in Germany during the first phase. In a second phase, the transformation of potato starch or other biomass into starch or hydrolyzed sugars will be addressed, along with the industrial production of the different biopolymers within the Basque Country/Spain. The problem addressed by B4H is increasing the industrial capacity for PHBV compounding production at a competitive price. Currently, PHBV production requires large biofermenters, which are not available for biopolymer production in Spain.
