CleanUp MDC is a social enterprise born from lived experience in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, where plastic waste burning, blocked drainage, flooding, and polluted water are daily realities for low-income communities. Witnessing preventable illness and loss caused by unmanaged waste revealed a painful gap, recycling systems existed, but they excluded the people most affected those without smartphones, internet access, or digital literacy. To bridge this gap, we created JoliTrash, a toll-free, AI-powered voice recycling platform that connects households to nearby waste collectors through a simple phone call in local languages. No smartphones, apps, or internet are required. Users receive sorting guidance, schedule pickups, recycle their waste, and earn income. To date, JoliTrash serves over 30,165 active users including 17,924 women and has enabled the recycling of 10,000 tons of plastic, avoiding an estimated 25,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
