A spin-out from Edinburgh Napier University since January 2024, Mercel is primarily a Materials R&D company with plans for a manufacturing facility in Scotland in 2025. Co-founders are a 15 year team with extensive experience in biomaterials and in taking lab based nanomaterials research via pilot plant to full production. We use our patented technology on waste material from seaweed processing to develop sustainable nanomaterial replacements for fossil fuel plastics used as coatings in packaging as well as other applications in home and personal care products. All of our products use low energy, zero waste, green chemistry processes and are biodegradable. The company is currently renting facilities within Edinburgh Napier University, with ongoing contracts in place to provide products and services to companies in the UK, EU and US.
