Mycrobez, a Basel-based biotech startup, is pioneering the development of sustainable materials through its innovative automated upcycling process. This process merges organic waste with fungal roots, or mycelium, to create a versatile, zero-waste natural foam. This mycelium composite serves as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based materials, offering applications in packaging, construction, agriculture, and interior design. Not only is the composite climate positive and fully biodegradable, but it also promotes soil health post-use and is economically competitive with existing foams in terms of cost and production capabilities. This new standard for material production aims to reduce millions of tons of CO2 annually while substantially lowering packaging waste. This is all part of a larger circular economy vision. Mycrobez’ technology platform will close the gaps between bio-waste, the production of a climate-neutral product, subsequent disposal and reintegration into nature.
