At NABACO, a startup founded in Texas with a subsidiary in Spain, we develop applications based on bentonite clays. We are currently working on VANTERRA, a PFAS-free barrier coating for more sustainable food packaging. It provides barriers against grease, oxygen, and moisture and can be applied to paper and cardboard through standard processes such as rotogravure. Its formulation combines polymers and clay platelets, providing strong performance at low coating weights. The technology derives from a commercial coating for fresh produce with OMRI certification and GRAS status. NABACO has received federal SBIR funding and has validated rotogravure-scale application with leading paper manufacturers, while also collaborating with European producers. VANTERRA aims to replace plastics, laminates, and metallized materials; improve recyclability and fiber recovery; and reduce fossil-based materials.
