Fibtray Solutions, a startup backed by AINIA and REDIT Ventures, has signed an agreement with Grupo La Plana to manufacture Fibtray®, a laminated cardboard tray designed for modified-atmosphere packaging applications. The agreement aims to accelerate the market launch of this AINIA-patented technology and provide it with industrial production capacity.
According to AINIA, Fibtray® can reduce plastic use by up to 96% compared with certain conventional trays. The solution is designed to be recycled through paper and cardboard waste streams and features a flat, uniform and seamless sealing edge developed to improve airtightness and reduce the risk of defects during the packaging process.
The tray can be integrated into existing packaging lines and used with modified-atmosphere systems, a widely used technology for extending food shelf life. Its design supports a range of applications, including fresh meat and fish, cold cuts, salads and ready meals.
The collaboration combines the technology developed by AINIA and Fibtray Solutions with Grupo La Plana’s experience in manufacturing cardboard-based solutions. The aim is to turn an innovation created through research and development into an alternative that can be manufactured at scale and integrated into the food industry’s current processes.
